TMDL Cost Share

A stream’s Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) is the amount of pollutant it can contain and still meet water quality standards. The TMDL initiative is aimed at improving and maintaining water quality in impaired streams identified by Virginia’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).
There are 12 impaired streams in Piedmont SWCD’s three counties:
- Deep Creek
- Flat Creek
- Nibbs Creek
- Saylers Creek
- West Creek
- Little Nottoway River
- Nottoway River
- Briery Creek
- Bush River
- Little Sandy Creek
- Spring Creek
- Hurricane Branch
Producers in these areas receive 85% cost-share for BMPs that include stream exclusion, grazing land protection, riparian buffers, stream bank stabilization, and animal waste management and are eligible for 25% tax credit on the total out-of-pocket expenses not covered by the 85% cost share for approved practices.
Your benefits from TMDL stream exclusion:
- Healthier cattle and improved weight gain
- Better grazing system
- Improved pasture utilization and quicker pasture recovery
- Increased return on investment
Qualifying practices are designed to exclude livestock from streams and ponds while providing alternate sources of water and improving pastures through rotational grazing.
